A little fashion featuring Chris Thompson, wardrobe by Slavin Agency
Canada Day celebrates the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the British North America Act (today called the Constitution Act, 1867), which united two British colonies and a province of the British Empire into a single country, still within the Empire, called Canada. Canada Day observances take place throughout Canada as well as internationally. Canadians celebrate widely from family day bbq, to local festivals, televised celebrations displaying the best of Canadian talent with attendance by various government dignitaries including HRH Queen Elizabeth II this year. Most towns (and families) end the days celebrations with a fireworks show and Barrie’s display last evening didn’t disappoint.

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of meeting Kim Martin, who is a professional pet portrait artist. Having seen her work first hand, the detail in her paintings is incredible. Kim who is from Thornton, is featured in the current issue of PIE magazine on sale now at Page & Turner Dunlop st and Chapters/Indigo stores. It was a pleasure to have her back in the studio today and catch up over a coffee. Kim Martin can be found online at www.kimmartin.ca
Wow… March already….is it just me or is this year just zipping by? The past few weeks have been busy, shooting model portfolio material, consulting for yet more weddings this year and of course, Barrie’s PIE magazine (issue 3 is coming soon). Got some time to spare? why not check out PIE magazine on Facebook and become a fan if you haven’t already, click here to visit (link will open in a new window). I’m not sure how many of you watched the Olympics…here in Canada it came to a nail biting finish with an ice hockey match between the USA and Canada. To all the athletes that competed, congratulations on your achievement performing in the Olympics. Of course this being March, all Irish thoughts turn towards celebrating as St. Patrick’s day approaches….

Michellyn, one of the models at the Bradford Greenhouse / PIE Magazine Fashion show, Jan 9 - 10
Its been a busy weekend at the Bradford Greenhouse, located on Dunlop Street West where a show for women took place last weekend. Stalls ranging from healthy chocolate (yes there really is such a thing, I sampled it), to myriad ways of getting fit and healthy and many others, simply something for everybody. Sandra Roberts of PIE magazine staged a fashion show both days and watch out for photo’s from the show in the coming issue this February. Meanwhile enjoy the teaser from the weekend….
Despite the cold weather we’ve started this year with, things heated up in the studio quickly today with Tiffany Everett. Tiffany is a finalist in Miss Petite Canada Ontario (a division of Miss Canada) and I was excited to have her in the studio for a promotional shoot for her. Hair styling was provided by Sandra Roberts of PIE Magazine, and Make up was courtesy of Sherrey Hall. Also shooting with me today was George Baker of Baker Photography. I’d like to wish Tiffany the very best of luck in the upcoming stages of the contest and look forward to supporting her.
Another favourite from the series I shot recently with local model Sherrey Hall. My dog (Sprocket) has never sat so still or looked this dignified…..but he does like to be brushed so that may have had something to do with it.

The Centre was incorporated in 1986 as the Barrie Gallery Project, a not-for-profit, charitable organization. The Gallery Project opened a storefront gallery space in 1988 at 17c Mulcaster Street. In 1989, local businessman Maurice MacLaren left his collection and residence at 147 Toronto Street jointly to the City of Barrie and the Barrie Gallery Project, giving the gallery a permanent home. In response to the bequest, the name of the gallery was changed to the MacLaren Art Centre in 1990.
I’ve been living here in Barrie for the past five years almost and with a first time for everything, this was my first time venturing into the MacLaren. Fabulous building, great architectural features inside, and on a bright sunny day last wednesday, I was there for the debut of PIE magazine issue 2 (coming soon to a chapters/indigo near you….check the shelves next week) … and a fashion show.
