Beaches and the Hazy days of summer

Yesterday I headed to downtown Toronto in the company of fellow photographer, Meagan Slater (Astrum Studios) and Bryan Beard. Toronto, with its busy streets, tall buildings, and a melting pot of cultures offers a multitude of photographic opportunities. With much of the old architecture preserved, and a blending with the new and modern styles…it provides a pleasant contrast. I feel too many of us pass by these unnoticed features of our towns and cities every day, not appreciating the beauty that’s there to be seen. Our everyday lives have become so busy that we become focused inwards on our needs, and no longer lift up our heads and look around. Some of the aspects of Toronto from yesterday….

Following a quick exploration of our surroundings, we met up with Amanda Costa, and headed for Hanlan’s Point for a photoshoot. I always enjoy working with Amanda, shoots are relaxed,  fun and lively, and the time just flies by. I’ve known Amanda now for more than a few years and it was great to meet up and catch up on whats been happening. Some teasers from Amanda’s shoot….

We’re busy…..

Its been a while since I’ve had the chance to sit here and talk about the latest shoot….in fact, there’s been several shoots since the last blog post. Between shooting and post editing, getting wedding albums out on time…meeting new friends, catching up with old friends….its been an absolute whirlwind. About two years ago, I ‘met’ Trina on Facebook (does anyone know someone who doesn’t use Facebook these days?), late last month, I had the pleasure of meeting her in person for the first time. I can honestly say she’s no different that the impression one gets from her online, pretty, fun, full of life and intelligent. Over the past few weeks, she has taken part in shoots, and indeed took a few photo’s herself at some of the shoots….safe to say that the camera bug took hold!!

The past few weeks have also seen me shooting with Meagan Slater of Astrum Studio’s. Apart from enjoying the company of a fellow photographer and sharing knowledge, Meagan is extremely talented in her craft, and its a pleasure to see how a simple photograph evolves into a work of art under her hand. Truly one of the most creative and artistic people I have had the pleasure of knowing in a long time. Her studio is also based here in Barrie and if you would like to see more of her work, check her out on Facebook (click here), or her website at www.astrumstudios.com

Of course no photoshoot is complete without the crew behind the scenes, one of these being the make up artist. I was introduced to Billie Kelly at a recent shoot, and I recommend her services 100%. You wont be disappointed.  You can find Billie at www.makeupbybillie.webs.com

As I mentioned earlier, we’ve been busy with photoshoots…both with new models and some of our regular clients….Thanks to Sher, Ciara, Trina, Meagan, Amanda, Sophia and the two Ariels for coming out and taking part. Some of our favourite photos from these shoots are below!! Amidst the photoshoots, we continue to shoot on Saturday nights at the Barrie speedway….the thrill of racing never fails to match the excitement of the spectators, and in true Nascar fashion….there’s the spinouts and crashes (much to the chagrin of the drivers at times). Well worth checking it out if you want to do something different on a Saturday night.

For those of you that enjoy a somewhat slower pace, and photographing the natural environment, theres a multitude of places just outside of Barrie that offer such respite. On a recent trip, one such tranquil scene remains etched in my memory. Thanks to my good friend that introduced this location to me….

From the beach and more

Ontario is blessed to have several fine beaches which many of us frequent during these hot summer months. The big one, in Ontario terms, is Wasaga Beach on Georgian Bay. It’s miles of golden sand are generally full once school is out and, because it’s the busy one, it has the amenities to go with it. However if one looks hard enough, there are many smaller beaches along the lake shoreline which are hidden little gems. I had the pleasure of being amongst good friends yesterday evening at one of these little hidden gems….incredibly the beach was quiet….so four photographers and five models enjoyed having a lot of beach space to share. Later in the evening, spending time with a good friend of mine Meagan, (www.astrumstudios.com) was the perfect end to an enjoyable evening. Click on any image to view larger size (recommended)

Tanika

Katy Marie has been in our studio a few times and we’ve also had the pleasure of shooting with her on location as well, so when she asked if we would be interested in shooting her daughter, we jumped at the chance. Tanika was simply awesome to work with, relaxed and posed naturally, hardly needing any direction. Wardrobe changes were quicker than I’ve ever seen, and time just flew by, scores of fabulous images now to sort through. Look forward already to seeing them both back here again soon.  Meanwhile, heres some teasers….

Emily

I’ve had the pleasure of working with make up artist Ashley Dining (click here to see her facebook page), so when she asked last week if I would be interested in shooting her cousin, Emily, for Abercrombie & Fitch, I agreed right away.  Ashley does fantastic work and I love her attention to detail. However today’s weather forecast wasn’t the most promising with a call for showers, and possibly thunder showers… but an overcast day is perfect for shooting black and whites. Emily was an absolute pleasure to work with, and as I quickly found, takes direction extremely well. Our time together at the shoot just flew by and was over all too soon. I think Emily has a great career ahead of her as  a model, here’s wishing her the very best with it. I’m already looking forward to when she’ll be back for a shoot again….

Krystie Ann

All too often we ‘meet’ people online in a somewhat related profession to our own, especially with the recent explosion of social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook. Krystie is a make up artist here in Barrie and as a photographer, more often than not for photoshoots, we need someone on make-up. Although Krystie and I have been friends on Facebook for quite a while now, it wasn’t until today that I finally got to meet her. Although she was here in a different capacity as a model, I thoroughly enjoyed having her here and it was a blast.

Krystie Ann has worked for various high end makeup companies including Estee Lauder and CARGO cosmetics. A Beauty contributor/columnist for PIE magazine, she was also a member of an elite makeup team for CARGO cosmetics giving consultations, makeovers and promoting new products at various locations across the GTA. She has many prestigious accomplishments such as being nominated for Makeup Artist of the Year for the Barrie’s Readers Choice Awards, a finalist for Makeup Artist of the Year for the Mirror Awards 2007 and Semi Finalist in the same category for the Contessa Awards 2006.

To see more of Krystie’s work, check out her website at http://www.krystieann.com/

IDFA Winner

Fitness is something we should all be concerned with, it directly affects our health and well being. So when Alison suggested she and her husband come in for a shoot, I was excited to have them here. Alison and Ken took part on the IDFA Natural Novice classic last weekend, with Alison placing fourth in Fitness Model, 3rd in Figure and winning the Inside Fitness Transformation Challenge. Ken placed eight in mens novice bodybuilding.

The  International Drug Free Athletics (IDFA), founded in 2005, is committed to promoting drug free (natural) bodybuilding world wide through education, awareness, camaraderie, and community involvement. The integrity of drug free athletics and sport is maintained through awareness programs and the promotion and sanctioning of drug free bodybuilding, fitness and figure competitions and shows. The IDFA will have in place strict drug testing guidelines and protocols to ensure a fair playing ground at all IDFA sanctioned events.

Alison and Ken will be featured on Inside Fitness magazine soon, so let’s keep an eye out for that. I really enjoyed having both of them here in the studio for their shoot, it was an absolute blast!!  Here’s some from the shoot…..

Stock Shoot

Its been a while since I was at, and co-organised one of the bigger stock photo shoots which I normally do during the year. Stock photography is the supply of photographs licensed for specific uses. It is used to fulfill the needs of creative assignments instead of hiring a photographer, studio, models etc. Ideal for low budgets. Thankfully the weather has warmed up nicely so its quite a bit more comfortable outdoors, even though there’s still snow on the ground. Four photographers and five models made for quite a busy day and quite a few concepts were successfully bagged. Of course, the catering team (consisting of our respective wife’s, Colleen and Suzanne) is also worthy of mention as is our make up artist that day, Erin Harris who did stellar work. Many thanks also to our faithful and reliable models who were there that day.  Here’s a few teasers from Saturdays shoot….
