It’s been a busy week, many shoots plus other projects on the go such as the upcoming photo scavenger hunt here in Barrie, and Help Portrait 2010 is coming up fast also.
So…lets start with some of the latest photoshoots. Jen Bothello had been in touch asking about doing a witch themed photoshoot, based around the book Shadowland by Alyson Noel. Having worked with Jen recently, I jumped at the chance to work with her again, in collaboration with Meagan from Astrum Studio’s. Of course, doing a candlelit shoot required darkness for optimum results, we opted to go walkabout in downtown Barrie and shoot while waiting for darkness to fall. Jen’s cousin Amy came along to watch, and inevitably, also ended up modeling for us as well.I’m not sure what anyone else thinks, but it seems to me that Jen bears a little resemblance at times to Jennifer Love Hewitt, who plays Melinda Gordon on the TV show ‘Ghostwhisperer’, so I shot my interpretation of the theme

Following hot on the heels of yesterdays shoot was Josh McAree today. I met Josh about a year ago through model mayhem when I was looking for a male model for a dirty dancing themed shoot. It was pleasure to have him back again today and catch up. Josh had a few ideas he was keen to shoot, so along with Meagan from Astrum studios, we decided to head over to Minets point. Mother nature teased us a little with the weather, but looking over the results, we couldnt have asked for better lighting and shooting conditions.

As always, to see a slightly larger version of any of the photo’s here, just click on it. There’s lot of more shoots planned over the coming weeks so posting on the blog will remain a little sporadic.
As I mentioned earlier, The first annual photo scavenger hunt will take place on October 3oth, and O Driscoll Imaging is proud to be counted amongst the planning team, alongside Astrum Studios and Baker Photography. With different skill levels and categories to shoot, there’s prizes to be won….so for more information please visit http://www.photoscavengerhunt.ca (you must register in order to enter). The main idea of the event is to both showcase the incredibly strong arts and culture presence that we have here in Barrie, as well as promoting the city we live in.I would like to extend a sincere thanks to Danielle Reeder, store manager at Henrys, Mark from Snap Barrie, and Gary Owen, custom framing for their generous support.
Help Portrait is an event that took place in Barrie for the first time in 2009, and I’m proud to once again be the coordinator for it again this year. The primary aim of Help portrait is the coming together of professionals in our city; photographers, make up artists, hairstylists not forgetting the many volunteers we have, plus the strong support from both local and national businesses. We don’t use the event to promote our individual businesses in any way, its our way of giving back to the community we live in, by providing a completely free make over session and portrait session to those that normally could not afford a professional portrait sitting. Help Portrait was a tremendous success in 2009, lets make 2010 even better. Right now, I’m looking for hair stylists and make up artists for the event this year, so if you’re interested in helping out, even if only for a few hours, email me at chris@odriscollimaging.com – it takes place on December 4th, approximately from 9am until 6pm. If you know somebody that may be interested in helping, please let them know.
Making the best of the recent spell of fine weather, thankfully without the high humidity we’ve had of late, my friend Meagan and I decided to hit downtown barrie for a shoot over the past few days. Meagan is the owner photographer of Astrum Studios here in Barrie, and being in front of the lens helps understand what the models see, and experience. This in turn leads to a greater understanding from the photographers point, and with the experience, allows better direction of a shoot. Here’s a few teasers from the walkabout town….click on any photo to view larger size
Photography is one of the hobbies that people can pick up and learn fairly easily. Some people have the impression that there is a trick to taking great pictures. There are some different elements you need to consider in order to both enjoy photography as a hobby, and take great pictures. The fact is, with a little knowledge and some practice, wonderful pictures are a click away. For some of us, our living comes from what we love, taking photo’s.
Despite the somewhat intermittent inclement weather today, around 40 photographers of varying skill levels, camera models took part in the Scott Kelby annual photo walk, one aspect uniting everyone, their passion for taking photos. The pre-planned route took us down along lakeshore towards Johnsons beach (which we never did reach), unfortunately mother nature had other plans late in the walk, giving almost everyone a nice shower for their valiant efforts. Thanks to the staff at Queens Hotel on Dunlop street whom revived many of us with liquid refreshment, both alcoholic and non alcoholic, as well as some delicious food.
I would like to extend my thanks to everyone that took part in the walk today, together you all made it a tremendous success, and look forward to 2011.
If you are entering the contest, please revisit the page where you registered (http://worldwidephotowalk.com/walk/barrie-on-canada/) where you will find a link to upload your best photo from the walk. You may change your choice until july 31st, after which no more submissions will be accepted
I’m proud to announce that O Driscoll Imaging is now a sponsor for Barrie Slopitch 2010.
NSA Barrie has been around for a few years now and has been growing profusely in recent years, expanding from 11 teams to around 24 for the 2010 season. slo pitch is softball in which there are ten players to a team and legal pitches must travel in an arc from three to ten feet high. Some key differences are that softballs are larger than baseballs and the pitches are thrown underhand rather than overhand. Softball is played on a smaller diamond than in baseball; a softball field’s average distances from home plate to the center, left and right field fences are 220, 200 and 200 feet respectively (the corresponding baseball field average distances are 410, 325 and 325 feet.). Despite the game’s name, the standard softball is not particularly soft except in comparison to a standard hardball.
Our photography team will be attending the NSA tournament in Wasaga Beach on May 29th and 30th. If you’re interested, we’re offering a discounted package of a DVD, including action shots and team photo. Cost per DVD is $60, payable on the day. If you would like to book a spot or wish to pay ahead of time, email chris@odriscollimaging.com

This past weekend saw Barrie’s first zombie walk took place with a larger than expected turnout, a few hundred zombies took to the streets. Participants donated non perishable items to the Elizabeth Fry Society, a very deserving cause. The event was covered by several photographers and local tv news channels. Some devilishly creative minds out there as some fantastic zombie make overs were seen, and who could forget dad with his son Brian….the full selection of photos from the event can be seen at http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2616202&id=19390209593#/album.php?aid=116784&id=19390209593
The holiday season is rapidly coming upon us and the economy has hit us all hard in many ways. This year why not dip into your wallets and deep in your heart, to give to the less fortunate; To the single parents wishing to have holiday portraits of their newborn children. Those that would like the chance to have a family portrait. Something that can make their lives seem lighter in a time where they have to make choices between buying food and paying the bills. The holidays are about sharing, kindness and making people happy. With your help we can help some of these people.
So what is Help Portrait? Help Portrait is a group of professional photographers joining together for one day, who are using their time, equipment and expertise to give back to those who are less fortunate this holiday season. We will be providing free portraits to people in need who ordinarily could not afford the expense of a portrait session with a professional photography studio. It takes place on Saturday December 12th, from 9am until 4pm. Venues include Collier St. United Church, Bayfield Mall, Mapleview Church & St. Peters School.
What happens on the day? We will have professional photographers, make up artists, hairdressers, and other helpers, including students, at each location. Essentially what happens on the day is the client arrives, receives a small makeover (free), a visit with the hairstylist and then has their portrait taken. Delivery is expected within a week of the shoot. We are hoping to have light snack and refreshments available. To maintain efficiency , a cap of 125 will be placed on each venue.
So who can come for a portrait?
This is intended for people who ordinarily cannot afford a professional portrait sitting. Please contact your local church or organisation to be referred for your portrait sitting.
Sponsors
Mr. Michael Keogh of Chay Realty has kindly sponsored the cost of photo printing. Assisting with makeovers at one of the locations is the Orchid Room Day Spa. We are in need of more make up artists and more hair dressers (at present, we have one who has graciously volunteered her time and expertise).
How can I help? We need help in many areas, not just photography. We are seeking assistants, make up artists, and much more. If you want to be a part of this special day, please provide us with your contact information (leave a comment or email chris@odriscollimaging.com) and we’ll be in touch. Required information is name, email & a contact number, plus the service you are offering.
Donations of either products, services or monetary donations that will help us achieve our goal that day would be greatly appreciated.
All supporters will be duly noted with a word of thanks as we publicize the event in coming weeks.
This years proceeds go to the Grocery Assistance Program of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Simcoe County, so please bring a non perishable food item and/or cash donation to participate.
Watch out for our photography team covering the event
