From the beach and more

Ontario is blessed to have several fine beaches which many of us frequent during these hot summer months. The big one, in Ontario terms, is Wasaga Beach on Georgian Bay. It’s miles of golden sand are generally full once school is out and, because it’s the busy one, it has the amenities to go with it. However if one looks hard enough, there are many smaller beaches along the lake shoreline which are hidden little gems. I had the pleasure of being amongst good friends yesterday evening at one of these little hidden gems….incredibly the beach was quiet….so four photographers and five models enjoyed having a lot of beach space to share. Later in the evening, spending time with a good friend of mine Meagan, (www.astrumstudios.com) was the perfect end to an enjoyable evening. Click on any image to view larger size (recommended)

Tanika

Katy Marie has been in our studio a few times and we’ve also had the pleasure of shooting with her on location as well, so when she asked if we would be interested in shooting her daughter, we jumped at the chance. Tanika was simply awesome to work with, relaxed and posed naturally, hardly needing any direction. Wardrobe changes were quicker than I’ve ever seen, and time just flew by, scores of fabulous images now to sort through. Look forward already to seeing them both back here again soon.  Meanwhile, heres some teasers….

Back to the classics

The cars of yesteryear have never been more in style as they are now. From model A’s to chevies to caddies…souped up, gleaming chrome and wax polishes that your mother would be proud of, these old vehicles are lovingly restored back to their former glory. That deep throaty roar as they purr down the road, there aint no sweeter sound. Travel around the area enough, there are car shows every night where these hot rods can be seen (just don’t touch!!)… click on an image to view larger

Barrie’s Worldwide walk July 24th 2010

Photography is one of the hobbies that people can pick up and learn fairly easily. Some people have the impression that there is a trick to taking great pictures. There are some different elements you need to consider in order to both enjoy photography as a hobby, and take great pictures. The fact is, with a little knowledge and some practice, wonderful pictures are a click away. For some of us, our living comes from what we love, taking photo’s.

Despite the somewhat intermittent inclement weather today, around 40 photographers of varying skill levels, camera models took part in the Scott Kelby annual photo walk, one aspect uniting everyone, their passion for taking photos. The pre-planned route took us down along lakeshore towards Johnsons beach (which we never did reach), unfortunately mother nature had other plans late in the walk, giving almost everyone a nice shower for their valiant efforts. Thanks to the staff at Queens Hotel on Dunlop street whom revived many of us with liquid refreshment, both alcoholic and non alcoholic, as well as some delicious food.

I would like to extend my thanks to everyone that took part in the walk today, together you all made it a tremendous success, and look forward to 2011.

For those of you in the walk that would like to add your photos to the flickr group, the page can be found here http://www.flickr.com/groups/barrie_worldwide_walk/

If you are entering the contest, please revisit the page where you registered (http://worldwidephotowalk.com/walk/barrie-on-canada/) where you will find a link to upload your best photo from the walk. You may change your choice until july 31st, after which no more submissions will be accepted

Meagan and Craig

This past week has been amazing…and simply flashed by in a blur. New friends, new clients…becoming reacquainted with some old friends, and tonight having the pleasure of photographing a young couple that are truly in love. Meagan and Craig were an absolute pleasure to be with, good company, fun and making it easy to capture some great images. Shooting outdoors in the summer (apart from the infuriating mosquitoes) is great, fresh air, warmth and of course, gorgeous sunsets. Overall, the shoot this evening came together in spectacular fashion. As always…some teasers from the shoot….(click to see larger size)

Photographers……Need to rent studio space?

photography studio

photography studio

Hey folks

I’m looking to see who would be interested in rental of studio space and time. The studio will be located in downtown Barrie with easy access. Its anticipated that backgrounds will be provided, possibly lightstands and reflectors, and wireless internet. The rest of the equipment will be in your hands to provide. Under discussion and  undecided as yet is the provision of studio lighting.

I’m not looking for money etc right now, I just want an idea of who and how many would be interested. Rental will be available hourly, and in half day and full day segments. A membership scheme will be introduced also; this essentially will be a fixed fee where you are guaranteed studio time each month for a specified period of time, the fee of which will save you money over normal rental costs.

The studio space at max is 2400 sq ft, this may be divided in half to cater for more than one rental per day.

Murphy’s Law

For all those of you that were asking about my Facebook status during the week as to why I cursed my camera…..

Murphy’s law is an adage or epigram that is typically stated as: “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong”. As a photographer where your equipment is your livelihood, we always tend to try and have a back up of everything. Prior to any job, paid or free, you go through the checklist…batteries are charged, I have spares; have memory cards / film….sensor is clean, have the lenses I need….and some of us have that 2nd camera body….just in case!! Now before I get into this, I have to admit that my camera despite the heavy usage has never let me down. Canon’s 1Ds MkII weighs as much as a brick, and at the end of a shoot, it feels like you were carrying one as well. This is mainly due to the titanium frame inside….and yes the camera is a few years old now, there’s newer models on the market…but it does its job, usually without complaint. The worst incident since I got it was setting it on a table during a product shoot, not noticing the camera strap had got caught on my jeans and as I turned away, there was a heart stopping moment as the camera sailed towards mother earth and hit the ground with a thud. Remarkably, theres not even a dent or a crack to show that it even happened, and the camera worked perfectly fine afterward. I cant say the same for the pocketwizard that was on it at the time, the hotshoe snapped….but $5 for a replacement shoe and ten minutes of my time was an easy fix.

So I hear you ask, why a post on Murphys Law now?

Well during a shoot, photographers invariably check their histogram and preview screen during a shoot to ensure that exposure is correct.  So picture this……Its a sunny evening and you have a model standing in the water at waters edge. Now although its summer, lake water never really warms up enough that you want to stay in it for any great length of time. So albeit mid ways through the shoot, I keep on eye on those exposure levels. Mid ways through the shoot, I notice something unusual on the image being displayed on the preview screen….and I have to admit, the cause initially eluded me….

Horrors (no not the model silly!!)

Horrors (no not the model silly!!)

Using a 70-200 L series zoom, its long enough that you dismiss the shadow shape being a finger. Took of the lens and peered through it after looking at the front element to make sure nothing was there, but the lens is clean, nothing that could possibly cause this weird shadow. Meanwhile the model is now wondering what I’m up to, shes not getting any direction, nor am I shooting. So, what was the remote possibility that something had somehow gotten into the camera throat while I was changing lenses……so…the mirror is in its usual place, nothing around it….so I gently lift the mirror to check behind it….and that’s when my heart stopped. Those of you technically familiar with your camera will understand this part…the shutter curtain blades had collapsed and come apart. For those of you that aren’t so techie, these curtains (there’s two of them) slide apart to let light/ the image your shooting hit the sensor behind. This situation is not good let me tell you…since then, the camera body has gone to Canon Canada for a replacement unit – the repair cost is much less than buying another one of these camera’s….fortunately I did have a back up body to finish the shoot with…..
